Description This folder contains a total of nine case files for families served by the Day Nursery and Shelter (Neighborhood Centre Branch) in the 1910s. Family surnames include Kaplan, Gotland, Fishman, Deutsch, Zucker, Miller, Robitsky, Janofsky, Obtaker, Cohen, and Sobelman. Several of the cases concern children born out of wedlock, and case notes by social workers reflect attitudes about “immorality” related to sex outside of marriage, as well as judgments about “mental grades”. There is also discussion of the cost to the city to support and shelter orphaned or abandoned children. Records include case summaries, legal documents, medical records including the results of mental “evaluations,” as well as extensive correspondence between C. Marion Kohn (director of the Day Nursery and Shelter) and other local aid agencies, municipal count systems, and medical providers.
